Getting an ID
- New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) (dmv.ny.gov): apply for a New York driver license or non-driver ID card at a DMV office. Use the pre-screening tool to see what documents you need to bring before you go.
Getting a birth certificate or other vital records
- New York State Department of Health, Vital Records (health.ny.gov, 855-322-1022): order a birth, death, marriage, or divorce certificate. If you were born in New York City, order your birth certificate from the NYC Department of Health instead; this state site will point you there.
Sealing a criminal record
- New York Courts, Sealed Criminal Records (nycourts.gov): New York does not have true expungement, but many convictions can be sealed after 10 crime-free years, and some cases are sealed automatically. This guide explains who is eligible and how to apply.
Finding a job
- Center for Employment Opportunities (CEO) (ceoworks.org): a nonprofit built specifically for people returning from incarceration, with offices in New York City, Buffalo, Rochester, and Albany. Offers paid transitional work, job coaching, and placement help, no cost to you.
- New York State Department of Labor, Career Centers (dol.ny.gov): find a free Career Center near you for job search help, resume support, and training referrals, available statewide.
